1. Communication tools have different “half-lives"

Tem helps the teams he works with understand that each communication channel has a different half-life: Slack messages disappear into the either within hours; emails might last for a few days before getting buried; and a Google Doc comment hangs on until being resolved.

Many of us don’t have the luxury of picking the suite of tools we work with day-to-day, especially in larger organizations. Even if you can’t move your team to Notion or another similar tool, you can get better at making the most of the tools you already have access to.

Tem suggests nerding out on YouTube to find tips and tricks on using tools like Slack more efficiently. Becoming a power user won’t just make your day-to-day life easier, it’s also a good career move as digital tools become ever more essential in work life.

3. Iterate on a schedule

If you or your team are already using Notion or a similar tool, you know that it’s easy to get lost in a constant cycle of tweaking. You may even feel like you’re spending more time updating your workspace than doing the actual work it is meant to enable!

Tem suggests avoiding this trap by iterating on a schedule. Instead of making constant updates, check in on your setup monthly or every quarter to see what processes are working for you and which need to shift.
