about the episode

Meetings should be a powerful way for your team to collaborate and build relationships. So why are they so often the villain in the stories we hear about remote working?

In this first of a series of solo, mini episodes, Alix shares ideas to help you stop meeting when you don’t need to, find the right rhythm for your team, and meet more effectively to turn the energy you expend into real impact.

our key takeaways

1. Be intentional about your meeting culture by ending the habit of meeting by default. Instead, consider asynchronous ways of working and reserve meetings for only the most important conversations.

2. Know the symptoms of meeting culture gone wrong - everyone is late because they’re in back-to-back calls, folks are forced to meet outside of normal working hours in their timezone because calendars are so packed, and meetings feel ineffective because there are no agendas and no action items to follow up on. When you see the signs, it’s time to address and reset your team’s approach to meetings.

3. When you do need to meet, do it well. Even if you’ve cut down on the number of meetings on your calendar, you’ll still be frustrated by them unless you take the time to assign a facilitator, make an agenda with clear outcomes, and figure out a plan for follow up. A good meeting culture requires not only being more intentional about when you meet but also being more thought about how you meet.
